Munnar is one of the most popular hill stations in South India. It is nestled in the Western Ghats at an altitude the of 6000 ft and is located in Idukki district of Kerala. This picturesque hill station beckons nature lovers from far and near.
1. Mattupetty Dam
Mattupetty is among the most visited destinations in the tourist hotbed of Munnar. It is a beautiful picnic spot that regularly attracts visitors. People love visiting the dam and lake here and families can regularly be seen enjoying a fine afternoon in the area. The view of the valley from here is breath-taking and one gets to simply relax and enjoy the beautiful weather.
2. Mattupetty Dairy Farm
Indo-Swiss Livestock Project, a highly specialized dairy farm, is located in Mattupetty, 13 kms from Munnar in Kerala. Over 100 varieties of high-yielding cattle and about 400 heads of cattle are reared here.
Located amidst sprawling green grasslands, Indo-Swiss Project is 3 kms from Mattupetty Dam. It is devoted to cattle development and there is a research center set up by the Government of Switzerland.
The Indo-Swiss project has helped remarkably in the development of economic dairy farming in Idukki District. Because of the execution of the Indo-Swiss project, a new revolutionary wave has been created in the field of livestock farming in the state. A great milestone was the evolution of the Swiss Brown cross breed of cattle that is perfectly suited to the conditions of Kerala.
3. Kundala Lake
Kundala is a picturesque place, about 20 km from Munnar on the way to Top Station. It is at a height of 1700 meters above sea level. It is located at a distance of 20 kilometKundala dam, munnarers from Munnar. In Kundala, cherry blossoms appear twice in a year. The famous Neela Kurunji flowers which bloom once in twelve years, bloom in the hills and valleys around Kundala lake.
4. Top Station
Top Station is a mainstay among all who foray into the majestic hills of Munnar. This vantage point presents some of the finest visuals of the Western Ghats. People throng here to view the exotic Neelakurinji flower which blooms every 12 years. The drive, on a winding path decorated with rare flora, is one of the most exhilarating in the entire country. At 1700 m above sea level, it is the highest point on the picturesque Munnar-Kodaikanal Road.
5. Rajamalai (Part of Eravikulam National Park)
Eravikulam national park is spread over an extensive area of 97 sq km along the crest of Western Ghats in the high ranges of Idukki district. Located 15 km from Munnar, it is one of most important tourist destinations in Kerala. The national park is managed by the Kerala Department of Forest and Wildlife, Munnar.
